Her jaw hardened, and an invisible chip settled on her shoulderShe

    @@@@@It was
nearing ten o’clock and the aproned waiters were growing irritable; the majority of customers were
not full of largess, either in their hearts or in their pocketsJason wanted only a strong espresso, but
the perpetual scowl on the face of the approaching gar?on convinced him he would get mud if he
ordered only the coffee, so he added the most expensive brandy he could recall by name
As the waiter returned to the service bar, Jason pulled out his small notebook and ballpoint pen,
shutting his eyes for a moment, then opening them and sketching out everything he could envision
from the row of houses on his inner screenThere were three structures of two attached houses
each, separated by two narrow alleywaysEach double complex was three stories high, each front
entrance reached by climbing a steep flight of brick steps, and at either end of the row were vacant
lots covered with rubble, the remains of demolished adjacent buildingsThe address of the Jackal’s
buried telephone number—the address was available in the underground tunnels solely for repair
purposes—was the final structure on the right, and it took no imagination to know he occupied the
entire building, if not the entire row
Carlos was the consummate self-protector, so one had to assume that his Paris command post
would be a fortress, employing every human and electronic security device that loyalty and high
technology could provideAnd the seemingly isolated, all but deserted, section of the outlying
fifteenth arrondissement served his purposes far better than any crowded section of the cityFor
that reason, Bourne had first paid a drunken tramp to walk with him during his initial foray past the
houses, he himself limping unsteadily in the shadows beside his companion; and for his second
appraisal, he had hired a middle-aged whore as his cover, with no limp or stagger in his gaitHe
knew the terrain now, for all the good it did him, but it was the beginning of the endHe swore
    himself to that!
The waiter arrived with his espresso and the cognac, and only when Jason placed a hundredfranc
note on the table, accompanied by a wave of his hand, did the man’s hostile countenance
    move to neutral ground
“Is there a pay phone nearby?” asked Bourne, removing an additional ten-franc note
“Down the street, fifty, sixty meters,” replied the waiter, his eyes on the new money
“Nothing closer?” Jason peeled off another note, twenty francs“I’m calling right here within a
    few blocks
“Come with me,” said the aproned gar?on, gingerly picking up the franc notes and leading
Bourne through the open doors of the café to a cashier seated on high at the far end of the
restaurantThe gaunt, sallow-faced woman looked annoyed; obviously she assumed that Bourne
    was a discontented customer
“Let him use your telephone,” said the waiter
“Why?” spat out the harridan“So he can call China?”
    “He calls up the street
Jason proffered a ten-franc note, his innocent eyes looking blankly at the highly suspicious
woman“Augh, take it,” she said, removing a phone from under her cash-register stand and

    iii
My work was leaning against the north wall of
Little Pink, with the afternoon sun giving the
paintings plenty of natural lightLooking at them
from behind Wireman as he walked slowly down the
line, sometimes pausing and once even backtracking
to study a couple of canvases a second time, I
thought it was far more light than they deserved
Ilse and Jack had praised them, but one was my
daughter and the other my hired man
When he reached the colored pencil drawing of the
tanker at the very end of the line, Wireman
squatted and stared at it for maybe thirty seconds
    296
with his forearms resting on his thighs and his
hands hanging limply between his legs
"Shhh," he said, and I endured another thirty
seconds of silenceWhen he turned to face me, his eyes looked
very large, and the left one was inflamedWater -
not a tear - was running from the inner cornerHe
pulled a handkerchief from the back pocket of his
jeans and wiped it away, the automatic gesture of
a man who does the same thing a dozen or more
    times a day
"Holy God," he said, and walked toward the window,
stuffing the handkerchief back into his pocket
"Holy God what?" I asked"Holy God what?"
He stood looking out"You don't know how good
these are, do you? I mean you really don't
"Are they?" I askedI had never felt so unsure of
    myself"Are you serious?"
"Did you put them in chronological order?" he
asked, still looking out at the GulfThe joking,
joshing, wisecracking Wireman had taken a hikeI
had an idea the one I was listening to now had a
lot more in common with the one juries had heard

always assuming he'd been that kind of lawyer
"You did, didn't you? Other than the last couple,
    I meanThose're obviously much earlier
I didn't see how anything of mine could qualify as
"much earlier" when I'd only been doing pictures
for a couple of months, but when I ran my eye over
them, I saw he was rightI hadn't meant to put
them in chronological order - not consciously -
but that was what I had done"Earliest to most recent

I'd come to think of as my sunset-compositesTo
one I'd added a nautilus shell, to one a compact

You will hear enough of it to-morrow, sirWe have just been trying,
by way of doing something, and amusing my mother, just within
the last week, to get up a few scenes, a mere trifleWe have had such
incessant rains almost since October began, that we have been nearly
confined to the house for days togetherI have hardly taken out a
gun since the 3rdTolerable sport the first three days, but there has
been no attempting anything sinceThe first day I went over
Mansfield Wood, and Edmund took the copses beyond Easton, and
we brought home six brace between us, and might each have killed
six times as many, but we respect your pheasants, sir, I assure you, as
much as you could desireI do not think you will find your woods
by any means worse stocked than they wereI never saw Mansfield
Wood so full of pheasants in my life as this yearI hope you will take
a day’s sport there yourself, sir, soon
    For the present the danger was over, and Fanny’s sick feelings subsided;
but when tea was soon afterwards brought in, and Sir Thomas,
getting up, said that he found that he could not be any longer
in the house without just looking into his own dear room, every
agitation was returningHe was gone before anything had been said
to prepare him for the change he must find there; and a pause of
alarm followed his disappearanceEdmund was the first to speak—
“Something must be done,” said he

“It is time to think of our visitors,” said Maria, still feeling her
hand pressed to Henry Crawford’s heart, and caring little for anything

Fanny told of their departure, and delivered their message
“Then poor Yates is all alone,” cried Tom“I will go and fetch himHe
will be no bad assistant when it all comes out
To the theatre he went, and reached it just in time to witness the
first meeting of his father and his friendSir Thomas had been a
good deal surprised to find candles burning in his room; and on
casting his eye round it, to see other symptoms of recent habitation
and a general air of confusion in the furnitureThe removal of the
bookcase from before the billiard-room door struck him especially,
but he had scarcely more than time to feel astonished at all this,
before there were sounds from the billiard-room to astonish him
still fartherSome one was talking there in a very loud accent; he
did not know the voice—more than talking—almost hallooingHe
stepped to the door, rejoicing at that moment in having the means
of immediate communication, and, opening it, found himself on
the stage of a theatre, and opposed to a ranting young man, who
appeared likely to knock him down backwardsAt the very moment
of Yates perceiving Sir Thomas, and giving perhaps the very
best start he had ever given in the whole course of his rehearsals,
Tom Bertram entered at the other end of the room; and never had
he found greater difficulty in keeping his countenanceHis father’s

any stage, and the gradual metamorphosis of the impassioned Baron

and apology to Sir Thomas Bertram, was such an exhibition, such a
